Bugzilla – Bug 50805
Zimbra not in Ubuntu repository.
Last modified: 2016-02-10 01:22:12 UTC
Considering Zimbra is listed as an "Ubuntu Software Partner" and Zimbra quotes Mark Shuttleworth extolling the virtues of Zimbra on the website above, I was extremely surprised to find that it is NOT in the Ubuntu repository. Not even in multiverse. Not even the Open Source edition. Is there some license conflict that restricts people from installing it on Ubuntu in the Ubuntu-approved way; through synaptic? Why is Ubuntu pushing un-approved software not available in their repositories? Steps to reproduce: 1) Go to System->Administration->Software Sources 2) Make sure all of main, universe, restricted, and multiverse are ticked. 3) Click "Close" and allow the repositories to update if they need to be. 4) Go to System->Synaptic Package Manager 5) Type "Zimbra" into the search box. Expected Result: Zimbra package listed expected to install Actual Result: Nothing. No package. Zip. Nada.
Further demonstration of it not being in any repository can be done through the online package search utility: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=zimbra&searchon=names&suite=lucid§ion=all
Moving a large number of RFEs to Not Committed. We would encourage everyone to work with the support team, forum moderators and to vote for the RFEs to get them moved up for consideration for Zimbra 7 or 8. Thanks!
The problem is, Zimbra isn't packaged in a way that's usable for repositories. (they more or less abuse .deb als a tar replacement ;-o). The current codebase doesn't even compile without additional patching :( I've raised the topic many times, and even provided patches (*1), but no serious interested from upstream side whatsoever ... *1) https://gitorious.org/open-zimbra
